Photos...

There are some really official ways to cite photos that look something like this (in MLA format):

Last, First M. Photograph Title. Year Created. Photograph. Museum/Institution, Location. Website Title. Web. Date Month Year Accessed.

I am a big fan of MLA format sometimes. When I write a paper, I think it's totally appropriate to use MLA format for citations. When it comes to using pictures in blogs, I prefer a more straight-forward method. I would rather you spend time writing an awesome blog post than citing all of your images.

So, if you use your own photo (or a friend's photo), do this:

If you use a photo you find on the Internet, you should use only a photo that is copyright/royalty free or you should obtain permission from the owner first. However, practically speaking, people will often use others' images on their blogs. Sometimes that is a problem, but usually it's not an issue. So, if you use a photo you find on the Internet, do this:

That will let the world know that the image is not yours, tell them where you got it, and it will save you time over putting it in MLA format. Although it's not likely to happen, IF the original owner comes back and asks you to remove the image, do so immediately. Playing fair is the right thing to do!
